Let’s Dispel Some Hair Myths
Hair, it’s amazing how many ‘old wife’s tales’ and myths we hear, so here are some myths that you can dispel.
1: Shampooing too often causes hair loss.
1A: Shampoo can’t make your hair fall out. Regular cleansing is necessary to keep your hair healthy, and when using the right type of shampoo for your hair and scalp type you can wash daily if that’s your preference.
2: Brushing your hair frequently makes it look healthier.
2A: Once upon a time it was thought brushing frequently encouraged your natural oils to spread through the hair making it healthy, it’s now known that this can actually cause damage. Brushing should be carried out only when necessary, when blow-drying or detangling.
3: Pluck one grey hair out and multiples will grow back
.
3A: Hair only turns grey when your natural pigment stops being produced, therefore it’s not possible for more than one hair to turn grey just because you pulled one strand out.
4: Shaving hair makes it grow back thicker.
4A: If this was true everyone who wanted thicker hair would have just needed to shave their hair off and waited till their new thick head of hair grew in. Beards and body hair don’t grow thicker, or coarser when they are shaved off, so don’t try this on your head!
5: Trimming makes your hair grow faster.
5A: This one is interesting because it can be answered as true and false. True because the healthier the ends of your hair are, the more you will notice growth. If you have split ends, your hair won’t grow fast because the ends will keep fraying, that gives the appearance of slow or zero growth. False because hair grows in the follicle and is not affected by trimming the ends. Therefore, having regular trims to maintain healthy ends is beneficial for hair growth.
