Curl maintenance

Looking after curls and waves, both natural and permed requires some extra special care and attention.

If you think of the structure of your hair, the outside is like roof tiles, or fish scales, packed tightly together to create a smooth protective layer for all the moisture and proteins found in the inner structure. Moisture adds softness and shine to hair, protein adds strength and gives hair its pliability.

Damage can cause the layers of the cuticle (the name for the outer structure of hair) to become brittle and break, leaving gaps for the moisture and protein to escape from. This can also cause colour fade as the artificial molecules can be rinsed out through the openings.

Imagine then what would happen if you tried to curve tiles on a roof or bend a fish (not that we suggest you try to do that) …. The roof tiles and the scales of the fish would separate and create gaps in the protective structure…. Rain and wind would get in through the roof and the fish would drown because there’s nothing stopping the water from entering into the body.
