UVA and UVB rays – and your hair
We all know that it’s super important to look after your skin in the sun and most of use protective creams with sun factors to help minimise any potential damage.
Lots of make-up and moisturisers contain ingredients to help fight against the ravages of the sun’s harmful UVA and UVB rays helping maintain healthy skin.
We need to think about our hair in exactly the same way…. Protect, protect, protect.
UVA rays (radiation from the sun) are responsible for making your colour fade. The amino acids in your hair are photosensitive to the UVA rays and this can encourage the permanent colour molecules in the inner part of the hair (cortex) to shrink and escape through the outer layer (cuticle). Temporary colours that sit on the outside structure can also react to UVA and change tone, becoming warm or brassy.
UVB rays break down the proteins in hair which leads to a lack of volume, de-moisturised hair, split ends, flyaway’s and frizz, all making hair look and feel damaged. Proteins are an essential element of the structure of the hair and need to be in tip top condition to allow blow drying and straightening or curling to be successful. When the proteins break down, hair suffers.
But all is not lost, here at Rhona McCallum Hair we can recommend in-salon treatments that help restore the protein bonds and secure your salon colour for longer, plus our extensive range of homecare products are there to help you maintain healthy hair and scalp at home whilst protecting against UVA and UVB rays.
